Education
When I find myself reading WSJ on my phone then writing out journal entries on paper to make sense of the mergers, accounting treatments and pending lawsuits I read about, it reminds me of how much I love accounting. If that wasn’t real enough, I passed all of my CPA exams - and it only took me 1,373 days. I speak across the country and write about accounting, leadership, and the fascinating art of working motherhood on Medium, Forbes, Ellevate Network and my blog at www.nikkwinston.com. - Studied accounting at The Ohio State University - MBA from Troy University - Masters degree in Auditing & Financial Reporting (exp. 2019)
Experience
I have participated in or owned the month-end close process for every role I’ve held throughout my career. Digging into reconciling items is my thing. I learn a lot about a business by understanding the relationships between the numbers in the financial statements. My expertise is general ledger clean up, post-merger integration efforts and seeking ways to save money in my department by learning, documenting and re-engineering processes. I once had a job candidate tell me my interview was “hard” and made him nervous. As a leader, I have high expectations of my team - anything else is a disservice to them. I’ve managed teams from 2-40 and have an affinity for supporting them in realizing their fullest potential. I’ve created employee engagement programs, facilitated job-related training sessions and traded the old-school conference room staff meetings for outdoor walks around the building to build rapport with my team.
