Georgia Tech Senior in Civil Engineering and Finance Full Ride on Merit Scholarship Deans List

Experience

Hello. I am Ashley and I am good at math. I am a senior at Georgia Institute of Technology in both Civil Engineering and Finance. I am also laying a foundation for a Master's in Mathematics because I love it so much. I have made the Dean's list every semester and have a GPA way above average. I am currently working towards my professional tutoring certification after realizing I enjoy tutoring more than my engineering work. Now that you know I am completely qualified as a tutor, you should know I used to hate math. I loved science but math was hard. Most teachers didn't help me understand and I had to learn on my own. To teach myself, I started tutoring in high school and I was good at it. I was The Math Translator. Often math books and teachers have such a deep understanding of the material they skip steps or don't make connections because it isn't always clear what the student already knows. I have a talent for taking math-speak and distilling it into English, explaining how things are connected and how they work in clear language. The other thing I do well is identify knowledge gaps. Students, especially really smart ones, can get astonishingly far in math even if they skip a few fundamentals because they can compensate with other skills. The problem is every new concept needs to builds on previous knowledge Eventually a problem or concept surfaces where that missing link creates a huge problem (this usually happens in pre-calculus or trigonometry, or if you are lucky your first calculus class). However, these sorts of problems are easily resolved if identified before your math grade is beyond repair. If the real reason you are failing Calculus is because you don't really get word problems or reciprocals I will find it.
